First-Time Importer’s Guide to Buying Diamond Tools from China
October 9, 2026 · DIAMTO
Ordering diamond tools from China for the first time raises one big question that has nothing to do with the product: how does the order actually get from the factory to your door, and what will it really cost? This guide answers that — plainly, without jargon.
DIAMTO works regularly with first-time importers. Below is the process we walk them through: from a small trial order to a planned repeat shipment.
Start small: the trial order
You do not need a container to start. Our MOQ is 100 pieces per SKU, and mixed-SKU trial orders are normal — many customers start with a few hundred dollars of pads to test quality and turnaround.
Sample orders and small quantities can ship by air freight, which shortens delivery to days instead of weeks. It costs more per kilo than ocean freight, but for a first order the speed and simplicity are usually worth it.
What the order timeline looks like
Standard production lead time is 15–30 days after order confirmation. Add freight time on top: air freight is measured in days, ocean LCL in weeks.
Plan backwards from when you need the goods. Tell us your deadline in the inquiry — we will tell you honestly whether it fits.
Ocean freight (LCL) basics for small B2B orders
LCL — less than container load — means your goods share a container with other shippers. It is the economical choice once the order is too heavy for air freight.
You do not need to arrange this yourself. When your order is ready, mention in your inquiry that it is your first import — we will recommend freight forwarders experienced with small B2B shipments from China, who handle the booking, export paperwork and handover.
What to ask the freight forwarder
When you talk to a forwarder, these four questions cover most of what matters:
- Door-to-door or port-to-port — and what each option includes
- Who handles US customs clearance (imports need a licensed customs broker)
- Insurance: what is covered and what is not
- How volume and weight are charged — get the chargeable weight in writing
How we help first-time buyers
Send us the SKUs and quantities you are considering — even a rough list. We return product pricing plus packing details (carton sizes, gross weight), which is exactly what a forwarder needs to quote freight.
If it is your first import, say so in the inquiry. We will recommend forwarders, explain the steps in plain language, and keep the order simple: one shipment, one timeline, no surprises.

First-time importer FAQ
I have never imported from China. Where do I even start?
Start with the product, not the logistics. Pick the SKUs and quantities, send an inquiry, and tell us it is your first import. We will quote the goods and recommend freight forwarders for the shipping part.
What is the smallest order I can place?
100 pieces per SKU. Many first-time buyers order a few hundred pieces across several grits as a trial — small enough to test, large enough to be worth shipping.
How long does a first order take?
Production is 15–30 days after confirmation. Air freight adds days; ocean LCL adds weeks. For a first order, most buyers choose air freight for speed while they validate the product.
Do I need my own customs broker?
For US imports, a licensed customs broker files the entry. The freight forwarders we recommend can arrange this or point you to one — you do not need to find one yourself before ordering.
What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?
The standard MOQ is 100 pieces per SKU. Mixed-grit sets can be combined within one order — tell us the grit breakdown you need in the RFQ.
What is the lead time?
Standard lead time is 15–30 days after order confirmation. Samples and repeat orders are usually faster. Sample orders and small quantities can ship by air freight to shorten delivery time.
I’ve never imported from China before. Can I still order?
Yes — many of our customers placed their first China order with us. Mention it in your inquiry and we’ll recommend freight forwarders experienced with small B2B shipments, and help you plan the order step by step.
Planning your first order?
Tell us what you need — even roughly — and mention it is your first import. We will help you plan product, packing and freight contacts within 24 hours.
