How to Polish Concrete Floors with Diamond Pads

September 28, 2026 · DIAMTO

A polished concrete floor is built in three stages — grinding, honing and polishing — and each stage uses different diamond tooling. Get the sequence right and the floor comes up evenly; rush it and you lock in scratches that show under every light.

This guide walks through the full process with resin diamond polishing pads (also called concrete sanding pads) and metal grinding discs, the way flooring contractors actually do it.

Stage 1 — Grinding: flatten the slab

Start with metal-bond diamond grinding discs to remove the weak surface layer (laitance), level high spots and expose the aggregate to the desired level. This is the aggressive stage: the goal is a flat, uniform scratch pattern, not shine.

Work the floor in overlapping passes and keep the machine moving — dwelling in one spot digs a low area that every later step will reveal.

Stage 2 — Honing: refine with resin pads

Switch to resin diamond polishing pads once the floor is flat. Begin around 50#–100# to erase the metal-grinding scratches, then step through 200# and 400#.

A 400# honed finish is the standard stopping point for warehouses and industrial floors — matte, even and non-slip. Run each grit until the previous scratch pattern is gone before moving on.

Stage 3 — Polishing: build the gloss

For retail and showroom gloss, continue the sequence: 800# → 1500# → 3000#. The sheen builds gradually; most decorative floors stop at 1500#, with 3000# reserved for a true mirror finish.

Keep the pads wet throughout — water controls dust and keeps the resin bond cutting cleanly.

Edges, corners and transitions

Floor machines cannot reach within a few centimeters of walls. Do edges and corners by hand with smaller-diameter pads (3"–4") following the same grit sequence, or the perimeter will read darker than the field.

Blend the hand-worked edge into the machine area at each grit step — never try to catch up three grits at once at the edge.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Skipping grits — the #1 cause of visible scratch trails in the finished floor
  • Polishing before the slab is flat — gloss magnifies every wave
  • Running resin pads on a dusty floor — vacuum between grits so loose aggregate does not become extra abrasive
  • Forgetting the edges until the end — they need the same sequence as the field

Concrete polishing FAQ

What is concrete polishing?

Concrete polishing is a mechanical process that refines a concrete slab with progressively finer diamond abrasives — metal-bond discs for grinding, then resin pads from coarse to fine grits — until the surface reaches the desired honed or high-gloss finish.

How many grit steps does a polished concrete floor need?

A honed industrial floor: metal grinding plus roughly 50# → 100# → 200# → 400#. A high-gloss retail floor continues 800# → 1500# → 3000#.

Can I polish concrete with an angle grinder?

For small areas and edges, yes — with the right pads and dust control. Large floors need a planetary floor grinder for a flat, even result.

Are concrete polishing pads the same as concrete sanding pads?

Yes. ‘Concrete sanding pads’ is another common name for diamond concrete polishing pads — same tool, same diamond abrasive. Some suppliers also use the term for ceramic-bond transitional pads used between metal grinding and resin polishing.

Wet or dry for concrete polishing?

Wet is standard: it controls the large amount of dust concrete generates and keeps pads cutting. Dry systems exist but need serious dust extraction.

What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?

The standard MOQ is 100 pieces per SKU. Mixed-grit sets can be combined within one order — tell us the grit breakdown you need in the RFQ.

What is the lead time?

Standard lead time is 15–30 days after order confirmation. Samples and repeat orders are usually faster. Sample orders and small quantities can ship by air freight to shorten delivery time.

I’ve never imported from China before. Can I still order?

Yes — many of our customers placed their first China order with us. Mention it in your inquiry and we’ll recommend freight forwarders experienced with small B2B shipments, and help you plan the order step by step.
