Wet vs Dry Diamond Polishing Pads: Which Do You Need?
September 28, 2026 · DIAMTO
Diamond polishing pads come in two families — wet-use and dry-use — and choosing wrong costs finish quality at best and burned pads at worst. The difference is not the diamond; it is how heat and swarf are managed.
This guide compares the two honestly so you can spec the right pads for granite, marble, engineered quartz and concrete jobs.
The core difference
Wet pads are designed to run with a continuous water feed. The water cools the resin bond, flushes away stone slurry and suppresses dust. Dry pads use a harder, heat-resistant bond and open segment patterns that clear dust without water.
Both follow the same grit logic (50# coarse through 3000# polish). The choice is about the job site, not the grit.
When to choose wet polishing pads
Wet is the default for fabrication shops and most stone work:
- Granite and engineered quartz countertop fabrication — best finish, least dust
- Any indoor job where dust control matters
- Dark stones where scratch visibility demands the cleanest cut
- High-volume work — water keeps pads cutting consistently
When dry pads are the right call
Dry pads shine where water cannot go:
- Polishing edges on already-installed pieces (no water damage to cabinets or walls)
- Restoration and repair sites without a water supply
- Quick touch-ups and small areas where setup time matters
- Marble edge work — dry resin pads are the industry standard here
Can you use wet pads dry, or dry pads wet?
Running a wet pad dry will overheat the resin bond — the pad glazes, stops cutting and can burn the stone. Do not do it except for a few seconds in an emergency.
Dry pads can tolerate occasional water, but they are engineered to clear dust dry; constant water changes how they wear. Use each pad the way it was designed.
Dust, safety and cleanup
Dry polishing generates fine silica dust — a respirator rated for silica, plus dust extraction where possible, is mandatory. Wet work keeps airborne dust near zero but leaves slurry to manage; on site, contain it before it reaches drains or finished surfaces.
Wet and dry pads
Resin diamond polishing pads for wet and dry use, 3"–5", full 50#–3000# range. MOQ 100 pcs per SKU.
Wet vs dry FAQ
Which gives a better finish, wet or dry?
Wet, in most cases — the water keeps the cut clean and cool, which matters most on dark granite and quartz. A skilled operator can get an excellent finish dry, but it takes more care.
Do dry pads wear out faster?
Heat is the enemy of the resin bond, so dry pads work harder thermally. Following the full grit sequence without pressing too hard keeps wear even.
What backing pad do I need?
A hook-and-loop backing pad matched to your pad diameter (3", 4" or 5"). The same holder works for wet and dry resin pads of the same size.
What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ)?
The standard MOQ is 100 pieces per SKU. Mixed-grit sets can be combined within one order — tell us the grit breakdown you need in the RFQ.
What is the lead time?
Standard lead time is 15–30 days after order confirmation. Samples and repeat orders are usually faster. Sample orders and small quantities can ship by air freight to shorten delivery time.
I’ve never imported from China before. Can I still order?
Yes — many of our customers placed their first China order with us. Mention it in your inquiry and we’ll recommend freight forwarders experienced with small B2B shipments, and help you plan the order step by step.
